You do your best to look after your beloved pets and in return they provide great companionship. But did you know that having a pet in your life actually helps you to be healthier and happier?

Articles published in the scientific journal The British Journal of Health Psychology reports that people with pets are happier than those who do not have a faithful furry companion. The positive impact that pets have on mood and happiness have a deeper physiological impact too. It was found that individuals with dogs had a lower rate of illness, lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. Whilst there has been no scientifically explicable causal link between having a pet and these health benefits, it is most probably likely due to decreased stress levels. The calming, de-stressing effects of pets helps to lower stress hormones like cortisol which has been linked to high blood pressure and elevated serum cholesterol levels.

One clear factor that helps to explain some of the health benefits of having a pet is the extra exercise that you get. Pets can be a handful and a lot of physical work. Playing with your pet, getting outdoor and getting some exercise with your pet keeps both you and your pet healthy. Being more active with your pets increases your heart rate which not only helps you to lose a few extra pounds but also will help to keep your heart healthy.

In addition to the physiological benefits of having a pet, researchers at the University of Leicester have found that pets also improve psychological development. It was found that children aged six years and younger developed social skills at an accelerated rate if they had pets. Furthermore, the companionship pets improve coordination, communication and social interaction skills.

Whilst keeping a pet can seem like a huge responsibility, Pets Direct is here to share that responsibility and make it as easy as possible to get you everything you need to look after your pet.
